Speak

I recently had a discussion with someone about censorship and a musicians ability to create the music they want to create. Here is what happened: I made a comment that Wal-Mart can kiss my ass because those non-union fucks refuse to sell a cd in their store with a parental advisory label on it and the person replied "good, people should not make music like that anyway!".

Now hold on a second... what the fuck am I missing here? I know I do not have any children but I still feel that it is not a musicians job to raise someone's child for them. We are given the freedom of speech and the freedom of fucking expression and I know that freedom of speech does not give an individual the right to scream "FIRE" in a crowd but I thought it might allow me the simple freedom to say "shit" if I so desire.

Parental advisory labels are put there for a reason... TO WARN PARENTS. I know that most of the material put there is not appropriate for a 10 year old but the simple fact is that material like that is not meant for them, nor should the children be able to get their hands on it.

In my opinion it is the responsibilty of a few people to keep explicit material away from children. Obviously parents are a factor but no matter how much of an interest they take a kid is still gonna do what they want to behind the parents back and that is where the other levels of protection come into play. Record companies for the most part do their job by labeling the cds explicit and unfortunately sometimes that is as far as it goes.

If a cd is deemed in appropriate for anyone under 17 then why is it so easy for kids to walk into a store and buy it when that same kid would not be sold a ticket to an "R" rated movie? I think that although a parent is the first line of defense the retailer has a responsibility as well. Maybe even the powers-that-be can pass tougher laws or enforce heavier fines on retailers for selling such material but I honestly will never know the right answer.

The only thing I do know is that if some musician wants to record a cd and they feel that the true way they want to express themself is with swearing .... so-be-it. None of us have the right to tell anyone how to live their life (unless it is your own child) let alone tell them how to create their own art.

This is my humble opinion and is not intended to offend anyone, I just wanted to speak my mind... now I will get off of my soap box.

sorry in advance to anybody offended, but here ya go (sing along):

Anthrax - Startin' Up A Posse Lyrics
(Anthrax)

Now I'm gonna tell ya a story
A tale of wrong and Right
and freedom is the reason
You can't take it without a fight

Verse 1
So now I'm startin' up a posse
(Suck my dick, suck my dick)
To come and look for you
We're gonna put a stop
To what you want to do
You f**king whores
(You f**kin' whores)
That's all you are

Verse 2
You say our records are offensive
(You're a douche, You're a douche)
Our messages ain't right
You say "We're gonna label records
So our kids can grow up right"
You f**king whores
(Let them decide)
That's all you are

Chorus
Shit, f**k, staan, death, sex drugs, rape
These seven words you're trying to take
Shit, f**k, satan, death, sex, drugs, rape
Right or wrong it's our choice to make
America the beautiful, Land of the free
Don't change the words to land of Hypocrisy

Verse 3
Now I'm startin' up a posse
(Fascist scum, fascist scum)
And we'll damn sure make you see
Something that offends you
May not be offensive to me
You f**king whores
(You f**kin' whores)
That's all you are

Verse 4
Now you might take offense
To a word like "f**k" or "shit"
(Dick!)
But you f**kin' don't have the right
(Cunt!)
To discriminate me for saying it!
You f**kin' whores
( You f**kin' whores)
That's all you are

Chorus

Verse 5
So now I'm startin' up a posse
(Motherf**ker, motherf**k)
To fight for freedom of choice
To fight for freedom of speech
We're gonna make you hear our voice

Verse 6
And now I don't do this to shock you
(That's the end, that's the end)
I don't do this for spite
You've got the choice, don't buy it, don't read it,
And don't say your opinion's right
You f**king whores
(You f**kin' whores)
That's all you are
(Cunty, cunty, cunty, cunt)

Verse 7
You know you can't censor my feelings
You can't censor my thoughts
Censorship's against
Everything America stands for
You f**kin' whores
(Let us decide)
That's all you are
(And this ain't sexist, either)

Chorus

I'm not even going to comment on the lyrics above. I believe they speak for themselves. *gag*

But as far as a retailer's right to sell what they want... why can't they?

Are you upset because your one-stop-shopping-center is making you go elsewhere to buy what you want? Just because WALMART doesn't carry it, doesn't mean it's not available elsewhere.

I seems like an aggrivation of inconvienence to me.

If *I* owned a store, and *I* knew what sort of lyrics were on a specific CD, then *I* could make the decision not to sell if it I so chose. Walmart is no different.

Can it be aggrivating to want something NOW while you're shopping at Wally World, but can't get it? Maybe, but it's still available at your local music store, or online for download.

And I get so tired of hearing this union crap.

WHAT DISCOUNT RETAILER IS UNION?!?!? And why is everyone always picking on Walmart??

Do you guys not realize, that if discount retailers go UNION, they won't be discount anymore?

I shop at Walmart because it's CHEAPER than Alberston's, the hardware store, etc. I like paying $2.95 for a box of Cheerioes as opposed to the $3.95 or more I'd pay if it were union.

Unions can kiss my ass. And if I want an explicit lyric CD, but happen to be too lazy to drive over to CD Warehouse or download it from BuyMusic.com... then I really didn't want it in the first place.

*also steppes off a soapbox*

BTW.. hey Crash! Long time no see! /wave
